Choosing a gift for someone who loves reading
Their reading habits tell you more than a bestseller list does.
Ask about what they enjoy
A reader may love one genre and avoid another, prefer a familiar author, or be exploring something new. Start with a book they enjoyed recently and ask what made it memorable. Was it the subject, writing style, setting or format? You do not need to guess their entire taste from one title. One specific observation is a stronger starting point than the assumption that every reader wants the same popular book.
Respect the format
Hardcover, paperback, digital and audio are not interchangeable for everyone. Someone who reads during a commute may value portability; a collector may care about a particular edition. Before buying, check that they do not already own the title and that the format works for them. For an accessory, consider where they read and whether it solves an actual inconvenience.
Make room for their choice
If you cannot confidently choose a title, plan a bookshop visit together or offer a flexible option from a store they use. A short note explaining what made you think of them adds context without pretending you have reviewed a book you have not read. Check the store's exchange policy, especially when buying an edition that may duplicate an existing copy.
