A WishNudge guide
A considerate gift for a coworker
Keep it comfortable, modest and appropriate to the relationship.
Match the context
A farewell, a thank-you and an office gift exchange have different expectations. Start with the occasion and any workplace gift policy or agreed spending limit. A present should not put a colleague in the position of feeling they owe you something. Avoid using price to communicate appreciation; a clear, thoughtful note can explain what you value about working with them.
Use what you genuinely know
Choose around an interest they have volunteered, rather than making assumptions about age, gender, family or personal life. Be cautious with highly personal items, strong scents, food and clothing when preferences are unknown. A work-related gift should also not imply criticism of their performance or suggest they need to work outside their usual hours.
Make receiving it easy
For group gifts, agree on contributions without pressuring anyone and let the message reflect the whole group. Think about how the recipient will carry the gift home. If you are not confident about an item, keep the gesture simple and focus on the thanks. Check the return or exchange arrangements before purchase, without promising flexibility the store has not confirmed.
Before you choose
- Check workplace policy and the spending limit.
- Use a known interest, not a personal assumption.
- Keep participation and receiving the gift pressure-free.
